What you should know about porcelain veneers

So you are looking at options to revamp your smile and you have your heart set on porcelain veneers, but you don’t know much about it?

Fear not, for we at Crookes & Jenkins Family Dental Practice are here to help.

Having been in the industry for years, we advise our patients not to make hasty decisions regarding cosmetic dentistry. It is important that you research your options and choose a dentist that is experienced in your chosen treatment option.

Here are some things you should know about porcelain veneers.

1. What is a porcelain veneer?
Veneers are unique shells made of porcelain and are tailored to fit your teeth, and your individual needs. Used for a variety of cosmetic corrections, the dental enhancement procedure shows immediate and visible changes to your smile.

  1. What can veneers do?

    Veneers are used to:
  • Colour correct yellow teeth for a whiter smile
  • Fix a chipped tooth
  • Fix gaps
  • Fix crooked teeth
  • Fix the shape of a tooth
  • Fix stains on the tooth
  • Fix broken or chipped teeth
  1. Are veneers permanent?
No. Veneers will eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain veneers can last from seven to twenty years, depending on you and how well you care for them.
  2. What is the procedure?
Taking the utmost care in servicing our clients, at our Rosalie dentist practice, we insist that our patients visit us thrice to complete the procedure. During your first visit, our experienced dentists will use the consultation time to get to know you better and advice you on your treatment options. The second and third visit will be to make and fit the veneers. The process will see enamel removed from your tooth to accommodate the veneer. To ensure the shell looks as natural as possible, we will undergo a process called bonding where the veneer will be temporarily placed on your tooth to examine the fit and colour. Your tooth will then be polished, cleaned and roughened before the veneer is fitted onto the surface.
  3. Is the procedure painful?
Typically, the procedure is not painful but there is a chance you might experience slight discomfort while the veneers are being fitted. Veneer shells are thin, so no pain should exist and our trained specialists will do their best to ensure that you are comfortable during the process.
  4. What are the disadvantages of porcelain veneers?
The major downfall of porcelain veneers is that they cannot be repaired if they break. Porcelain veneers are also generally more expensive than composite veneers because of the attention to detail that goes into creating its tooth like appearance.8. What are the dentistry requirements for veneers?
  • Healthy teeth with no previous bonding
  • Strong teeth: If a piece of your tooth is missing or replaced by a filling then your tooth will not be strong enough to hold a veneer
  • A large amount of enamel should be present on the tooth
  • Severely misaligned teeth cannot be fixed by veneers
  1. What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic veneers?
Unlike ceramic veneers, porcelain is smooth and appears as your natural tooth. Its surface is also not as easily stained as ceramic veneers are.
  2. Aftercare for porcelain veneers
  • Avoid eating hard foods like toast, chips, nuts or hard candy.
  • Chop up hard foods like apples, pears and chocolate
  • Do not bite your fingernails
  • Avoid contact sport activities
